Mag Cover

Type and Image Meet

Project 3 has been a challenge to say the least, but has been a lot of fun as well. Harmonizing text and image was a bit tricky. Especially when it came to placement and color. When creating the design brief, I knew the type of magazine my project would be was going to be fashion. I have a bit of a background in portrait photography and its always been a dream of mine to see my work on the cover of a high end fashion magazine. When digging for inspiration and research materials, I was drawn to Elle Magazine and Bazaar covers. The one thing about the covers that drew me in were very minimal, so that was a struggle trying to create something simple but not boring. Using the generative fill was fun, but my first variations became a bit tacky and were not true the magazine covers actually used by Bazaar.

I had a ton of original photos of my own in mind that I wanted to use, so narrowing it all down was a bit tricky. It came down to two images that I played with the as covers and it really came down to one feeling more dynamic, with more of a professional look. My black and white cover was very sultry and I had a hard time adding too much text to the image, also the text would get lost in the background. I had not seen any text boxes used in the covers found when researching so again I wanted to stay true to the magazine aesthetics used in actual publications. That's why there were no use of the text boxes. Also the type face's used were the closest thing I could find to the typefaces actually used in previous issues. Large serif fonts for masthead and san serifs used for dates and some supporting lines.

The cover I chose to present for my cover I am submitting is the Bazaar Men's issue. The background is a generative fill that gives really enhances the image I shot. It reminded me of those high fashion shoots you would see done in worn down buildings. The contrast between the background and the subject gave me that dynamic look I was hoping to achieve. This is a great tool for when you may have shot a subject you love the pose, model, and over all look but the background just isn't matching. Although in my design brief I did mention that my audience are woman 20-60, who have a love for luxury, travel, and culture, I do believe woman are able to enjoy men's fashion as well.
