Psycho
The Magic of Lighting
With the list of movies we were supposed to watch, it was hard to choose just one since there were so many good ones, also so many of them I had already had a chance to see. Psycho was a movie I know so many references too as well as watching the prequal Netflix made a few years back. So I figured this would be the perfect time ta actually watch the film.
The lighting in this movie was beautifully shot, especially due to the fact that its all in black and white. So we have some good use of high contrast lighting, perfect to grab your attention, and keep you on the edge of your seat! Which also gives some great opportunity for some harsh lighting again to exaggerate scenes. There was good use of dim lit lighting in the darker scenes to give it a creepy feeling. They also use shadows as well, like the scenes of his "mother". Each scene seamlessly flowed, with great use of jump cuts for the more anxious scenes to the fading into new scenes to symbolize time passing.
This movie had a strong beginning, starting with a love affair and hidden love. And it stays on a high note with the main character making a run for it. And then the whole experience at the motel is very dark and eerie. The music is very dramatic and helps provoke any anxiety they want you to feel. The mix of the the lighting, the music, and the transitions create a very iconic psychological thriller.
